I’ve been inspired to start writing again so am challenging myself to write a story, poem or essay every day until Christmas. No procrastinating or editing. Just get it done. Here goes.

Not just for kids anymore. No simple image behind a cardboard door.
Instead, it’s chocolates, jams, coffee and candy,
Whisky, beer, wine and cheese.
Pickles, pork scratchings or tea.
Snoopy, Harry Potter, Winnie the Pooh,
Barbie, Pokémon, Hello Kitty, Stranger Things.
LEGO, puzzles and crafts; knitting, cross- stitch,
Pens and books; bracelets and rings.
Tasty treats for cats and dogs,
Perfume and soap; make-up, beard oil, socks.
A treasure hunt, a murder mystery,
The world’s smallest Advent calendar tucked into a matchbox.
Human-anatomy ornaments, medieval cats,
Sex toys; dog toys, emotional-support toys.
Each little door of anticipation marks the passing days,
Building festive traditions and bringing daily joys.
Like the happiness a Christmas card from a loved one
Can deliver in an envelope,
It is the beautiful task of Advent to awaken in all of us memories of goodness,
And thus to open doors of hope.
